Be prepared for excitement at the John C. Hart Memorial Library as the new director of Adult Services, Ellen Tannenbaum, begins her tenure with innovative programs.
When Tannenbawn was only 5 years old, she already loved libraries. As a teenager, a school children's librarian, Jean Reidy, was iannenbaums mentor: starting as a page at age 14, Ellen went on to graduate from Southern Connecticut University. She has a bachelor of arts in philosophy, a certificate in administration and a master's of library science.
Tannenbaum brings to Hart her experience as director of the Dover Plains Library and, most recently, her eight years in Youth Services: at the Tuckahoe Library.
The position of Adult Servtces requires a potpourri of talents. Aside fiom selecting books and DVDs for the library collection, Tannenbaum will manage the teen volunteers, man the ref ere nee desk service, select programs of community interest and create new ones. Along with the swnmer reading for children and teens, she is planning a sum.mer re.C:tding program for adults. Readers will receive a coupon for a free book when signing up and prizes will be awarded for the number of books read.
In June, with the t1'eme "Build a. Better World," the library ·will be decorated for the event. Many inspired programs are planned like a collage workshop with artist and writer Michael Albert, a gardening workshop plus lectures along with movies and concerts shown throughout the year.
Best of all, Tannenbaum is a master storyteller~ During an international festival of storytelling called Tellabration tales are told in libraries schools and at fairs. Hart Library will host a. Tellabrat1on on. Nov 18. Tannenbaum and many other minstrels will perform.
