YORKTOWN HEIGHTS - After being located more than six years in a cramped trailer off Underhill Avenue near Yorktown Town Hall, the local extension of the John C. Hart Memorial Library will move to its new and larger location beginning late next week.

According to William F. Lynch, III, who was hired by the Town Library Board early in the summer and began his services as director two months ago, the Underhill A venue trailer will be closed from Friday, Nov. 18, to Tuesday, Nov. 22 to accommodate the changeover.

The transfer of the extension's 7,000-plus volumes, periodicals and other library materials, is slated to take place some 13 months after the town entered into a contract agreement with the Yorktown Central School District to rent one-third of the Sixth Grade School on Commerce Street.

The library branch, to be located in a portion of the town-rented space, three former classrooms that were converted into a large main room and one workroom, will reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 23; a reception to formally celebrate the occasion is intended for Saturday, Nov. 26, at 11 a. m.

The unofficial reason for the initial delay in getting the library situated was reported late in 1976 and early this year as the library board's balking 1 at the thought of a new location rather than being given a new building of its own. Supposedly, the town board back in 1970 told the library board that a new 1 building would be constructed for the extension; but that in the meantime, the trailer would be used as substitute quarters.

The extention had been licated in teh Hanover Street building which the Yorktown Town Museum moved into that year - and out of last year-having located on the second floor of the former elementary school on Commerce Street shortly after the town's first annual rental agreement went into effect.

Additional delays were reportedly encountered in relocating the library extension due to "red tape" involved in using federal Yorktown Community Devllopment Block Grant Program monies to pay for the renovating and the unforseen need to reinforce a ceiling and wall.

While the local CD program was in the process of spending the last-half of the approximately $6,000 in funds needed to perform the work, a third delay was reported; the need to get library furniture.

Rather than spend a lot of cash to buy new furniture, the town and library board reportedly approved of the supervisor's administrative assistant, Peggy Daly, negotiating a deal with the Marymount Convent in Tarrytown, the owners of the former Marymount School for girls in that village, which had used but "well taken care of" library furniture available for sale.

According to Mrs. Daly today, she purchased the furniture (which includes shelving, a circulation desk, magazine racks and charis) from the owners for $4,000. (The tables currently used in the trailer will be moved into the new location).

Said Lynch this morning, the amount of shelving purchased will allow the listing of the additional 2,000 to 3,000 volumns in the new site, if desired. There is also enought room to purchase additional shelving if an extra increased capacity is proposed.

While the $4,000 used for the furniture purchase came from the surplus of library personnel funds (due to shifts in personnel during the year), Lynch did not specify where the money is coming from - hr how much is needed - to pay for a prefessioanl moving firm in Peekskill to transport the materials an dequipment from th etrailer to the new site less than on mile away.
