Are you sick of the kiddie pool? Are you tired of stepping on defunct Cheerios? Are you and your toddler a trifle bored with Mr. Rogers?

There is a solution to these woes - for at least a few moments in a summer's day at the Hart Library in Shrub Oak. As in past summers, the Friends of the Library and the energetic staff are hosting a number of programs. offering activities for young and old during the daytime and evening hours.

For those of us who think that the library is little more than a source of summer paperback reading. we're in for a shock The Hart Library offers evei:ything from moyjes for klds to bridge for seniors. It is truly a community center.

With the children out of school and the youngest ones edgy from the heat and lack of routine activities, the librazy's children's programs are a must. Florence Stevens. coordinator of these programs. is offering a variety of activities:

For school age children from 7 -12 years old there are movies on Thursday after- noons at 2 p.m. SpaceĀ· Is lim- ited so it Is first come. first served. No adults. Shrub Oak library only.

"Through the Wardrobe to Fantasy Land" is the name of this summer's reading game open to all young people who can read Enter through the 'Wardrobe." follow the "Yellow Brick Road," conquer the castle at "Prydain!" For details contact either the Shrub Oak or the Yorktown Heights branch.

"Toddler Time" is a 15 minute weekly program for 2-3 year olds with parents. It is held at Shrub Oak on Wednesday mornings and at Yorktown Heights on Thursdays at 10: 15. Shrub Oak also is hosting a "Collectors are Cool Cats" series for all ages. Comic book collectors are invited to come Tuesday. August 17 at 1:30 p.m.

"Parents as Reading Partners," a program designed to encourage families to read together continues at both branches this summer.

For young people, Harriet Gross. the Director for Adult and Young Adult Services, maintains a cluster of activities.

The Poetzy Group which began last summer under the direction of Anne Marie Houcen. continued throu.Et)1 the school year, and will also be held this summer. It meets on Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m.

On the 2nd Monday of each month. the Computer Club meets to "share programs and exchange ideas." It is open to people ages 19 and up. This club is a great resource for prospective buyers who can get tips from the members. The Hart Library itself is planning a campaign for the purchase of a personal computer. It would be partly in-house and partly for the public. If there is an area resident who is seeklng to update their own system, the Friends of the Library may want to talk business with you! So far $800 has been donated toward the purchase of the library's computer.

Ms. Gross also supervises Homerun. a support group for home-based business women. Scheduled meetings are July 19, August 16, and September 20; that's every third Monday of the month, from 10 am. to 12 noon. This is an organization designed to meet the needs of women who operate or plan to operate business from home.

Bridge for Seniors continues on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. and the Stamp Club, described as a club for "serious enthusiasts," con- tinues on the first and third Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m. In addition. the Parents' Connection main- tains its ~hedule through the summer, meeting on Tuesday mornings at 10 am. Finally, library director Betty "Cobb" Stewart is plaJJ- ning the annual library book sale for the weekend of August 28. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the sale will raise needed revenue for the library. Volunteer salespersons :ire needed. as well as books. rt()pie with bOOks to donate should drop them off during the previous week. August 23. The sale will be on the library grounds. The library seems to have something for everyone, from movies like The Black Hole to comic book collections. lfyou can't find what you want. be it club or book. ask a librarian.
