About 50 friends and officials attended the "Open House" at the John C. Hart Memorial Library, Shrub Oak, Saturday afternoon.

Mrs. Arthur C. Lee, the chairman of the Board of Trustee, introduced John Downing, Town Supervsior and the treasurer of the Board.

In opening is address, Mr. Downing welcomed the assembly, particularly the 'Old friends of the library present. He gave a breief resume of the building and its finacning, pointing out that the cost of maintaining it, to the individual taxpayer, came to about $1,50 per year.

He paid special tribute to the foresight of the trustees, in their management of the library's fiancés. As a result of the contract they had signed with Dean & Ottaviano, which guaranteed them a minimum of $1000 per year income from the gravel bank, the property had earned a return of about $500 per acre, and would continue to earn for quite awhile.

He closed his address with congratulations to Mrs. Leslie Purdy, for her 20 years of conscientious service.

Mrs. Lee then introduced a quartet of students from the Shrub Oak High School who sang three songs, arranged by Mrs. Stanley O. Grierson, their music instructor. They sang “the Bells of St. Mary’s,” “Fair are the Meadows,” and “Beautiful Dreamer,” accompanied by Mrs. David Ellis at the piano.

The students who sang were Eleanor Taylor, Alice Diets, Barbara Powers and Carol Gordineer.

Mrs. Lee the spoke of her recollections of past trustees, and drew attention to the improvements made to the building. She said she felt that the problems that had beset the Board in past years, had finally been taken care of and the present Board felt it would be some time before further repairs would be necessary. Miss Lee then called upon Miss Mildred Strang for a few words.

Miss Strang spoke of her recollections of Mrs. Annie Hendee, one of the original trustees and the guiding spirit of the Library, who passed away about two years ago. In her time, she had been post mistress, church organist, music teacher, a trustee of the church and one of the outstanding community workers

She had been Miss Strang's music teacher and Sunday School teacher, her colleague in the Library Board and her peronal friend, and one who had taken great pride in the community and its history. “She was one who encourage young people to think for themselves and have in themselves,” said Miss Strang, “One of the biggest things she did for me was to make this library possible, she opened new horizons for me through this world of books. She will live forever in our memories as great lady.”

Mrs. Purdy Honored

Mrs. Lee then presented to Mrs. Purdy, on behalf of the trustees, a handsome traveling bag, in appreciation of her faithful service and as a token of esteem.

In accepting the gift, Mrs. Purdy expressed in turn, her appreciation, her pleasure in her work, and the happy association she had enjoyed with all members of the library board, past and present.

In closing, Mrs. Lee drew attention to the new electric mantle clock and the Children’s Corner equipment which had been purchased out the fund left by Mrs. Hendee. She encumbered some of the plans the Board had for extending the service of the library if the school relinquishes their use of the rooms it occupies at the present time.

Assisting Mrs. E. Munson Frost at the refreshment table were Mrs. Howard Olmstead, Miss Gertrude Hyatt and Miss Mildred Purdy.

Visitors signing the guest list were: Mrs. Genieve Martens, Mrs. Isable D. Tobias, Calvin Tobias, Miss Alva Wilson, Miss Carol Degolyer, Miss Verna Dingman, Mrs. Nellie A. Dahl, Miss Barbara E.
