Yorktown quilters are racing to complete their contribution to the Hart Library building fund by Wednesday April 23, when they plan to exhibit their quilt for the first time at a "coffee for the Quilt."

The "coffee" will be held at the library from 10:30 am to 12 noon.

The library plans to exhibit the quilt through the summer, then raffle it off in October. According to Cobb Stewart, director of the library, each householder will be mailed a book tickets. Raffle tickets are $1 each, or a book of six for $5. "I hope they will participate." she said.

Library employee Mary Lou McArdle bought the first tickets last week.

A bond issue in the summer will decide financing for the extensive addition, but of the estimated $2.3 million cost, the library muse raise $300,000. State Senator Mary Goodhue secured $50,000 for the library in the state budget passed last week in Albany.

The quilt is a 30 piece sampler made of 12-inch squares, hand sewn by volunteers. The group was first brought together by a quilting course offered by the library and taught by Kay Fowler. After the course ended, the group continued to meet at the library and as thanks for sheltering them, the ladies decided to donate the quilt as a fundraiser.

Stalwart quilter Patricia Barker is proud of their work. "I've worked on it so long, it's like a child to me. I can't imagine parting with it," she said. But those 100 people are already planning on winning it. Some have even planned their color scheme around it." she laughed.

The white, blue and rose quilt will be shown at the Northern Star Quilt Show in Somers in May, as well as at the Orange Fair and other arts and crafts shows.

All the designs on each square are different. Calling themselves "Quilters with a heart." they point to the heart design carefully stitched at the junction of each square. In the year it has taken to make it, between 15 to 20 people have been involved.

Barker is also proud of the quilters in the group. "We were all beginners and we didn't really know each other. But it's been an astoundingly congenial group." she said.

The library is looking for volunteers to display the quilt at each of these shows and to sell raffle tickets for the quilt.
