The Trustees of the John C. Hart Memorial Library of Shrub Oak, are holding "Open House" in the Main Hall of the Library Building, on Saturday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Members of the community and interested friends of the library are invited to tea and to participate in the ceremonies.

The 'Open House' is being held partly to commemorate the occasion of twenty years of service of Mrs. Leslie Purdy, the librarian in charge, and also to invite inspection of the renovating of the library, which the board members feel, is complete, with the exception of some work yet to be done on the grounds in milder weather.

At the present time, the library occupies four rooms. Two other rooms are occuped by school students of the first grade of the Shrub Oak Central School.

The Board of Trustees at the present time is made up of Mrs. Arthur Lee, Chairman, Miss Gertrune Hyatt, secretary, E. Munson Frost, Jesse Barger, and Miss Mildred Strang. Town Supervisor John Downing also serves as treasurer.

Serves 4,628 Residents

The 1952 reports show that the library served a year-round population of 4,628, with a registration of 326 adults and 304 juvenile residents, 43 adults and 34 juvenile non-residents are also registered. The shelves are regularly weeded of 'dated' books, and at the present time, there are 5,009 fiction and 6,166 non-fiction adult books on the shelves, also 1,225 juvenile fiction and 321 juvenile non-fiction books on hand. These were circulated to the extent of 7,072 during 1952.

The library has acquried 524 new books during the past year, of which 246 were gifts, and increase of 77 over 1951.

A table and six chairs for the children's corner was recently purchased from funds bequeathed by Mrs. Hendee, a former trustee now deceased.

Nobables to Attend

Prominent town officials will be on hand on Saturday afternoon, and the turstees also, to be called upon for short addresses. Music for the occasion will be under the supervision of Mrs. Stanley O. Grierson. Mrs. E. Munson Frost will have charge of the refresments.

The minutes of the early meetings show that its one long, continuous struggle to keep the doors of the library open to serve the public. The first meeting of the library committee was held on Sunday, September 21, 1919.

The comittee consisted of Rev. Mr. Hunt, Mrs. Annie Hendee, Mrs. Childs, Dr. George Kunz and Miss Charlotte Martens. Mr. Hunt was elected chairman and Miss Martens secretary, which position she held until 1930. Since 1940 she has served on the board in one capacity or another, and at the present time is chairman of the turstees.

Get Funds From Gravel

In 1947, a contract was signed with Dean & Ottaviano, of Shrub Oak, desires in building supplies, whose property adjoins that of the library, tenting them the rights of the gravel bank, which has since proved a "verirable gold-mine" for the library financial account. In the 1952 report, the treasurer reported a balance of $14,433 in the building fund, of which $1,373 had accured from the sale of gravel and fill during the past year.

Credit is due to a group of interested Yorktown residents, known as the 'Friends of the Library,' a literary club which sponsored the branch, formed in September 1948.

The firstbook was donated to the Hart Memorial Library by Mrs. Genevieve Martens. The book, 'The Amazing Adventures of Letitia Carberry.' by Mary Roberts, is still on the shelves. Mrs. Martens, although almost eighty-six years of age, is still and avid reader and a regular subscriber to the library.
