The Board of Trustees of the John C. Hart Memorial Library wishes to make known its position concerning the expansion of library services to the Yorktown community. We are provided a budget by the Town Board. We, then, are responsible for allocating funds to cover as many Library needs as possible. We have publicly stated many times that we wish to extend the hours of our Library to meet the minimum New York State standards and have repeatedly requested the resources to do this. The Library has over 16, 000 library card holders and an average of 5,800 patrons obtain services WEEKLY. When you consider that Yorktown's population is about 34,000 people, that is impressive.
The Library Board is very proud of our Director, Pat Barresi, and her skilled staff The community consistently applauds the quality of service performed by the Library. This highly qualified staff helps us to get the most out of our budget while satisfying the needs of our community.
We have been delighted to see various quotes from local office holders and office seekers which acknowledge taxpayer requests for additional Library resources and services. The Library Board of Trustees first step would be to reinstate personnel positions that were cut two years ago. This cut caused a reduction in hours that should now be reversed. Our patrons have told us many times that this is what they want. The amount of money needed to accomplish this is relatively small.
Again, we strongly support the expansion of library hours as long as we can maintain our high quality of service with appropriate staffing.
