YORKTOWN - It has been 20 years since the children's room at the John C. Hart Memorial Library has been renovated, and library supporters think it's time for a makeover.

They have hired an architect and developed a plan to reconfigure the layout of the children's room and update the color scheme. The redo is estimated to cost $150,000.

A key to the plan is that the money will be raised from grants, donations and fundraisers.

"The library is an extension ofthecommunity-ahubofactivity," said Joan Landzberg, president of the Board of Trustees. She said the goal is to provide a "welcoming" space for parents and children.

But Landzberg emphasized the renovations shouldn't be an obligation for property owners.

"People are hurting in this economy. There is no way we could go to the taxpayers for funding," she said.

A Friends of the Library Fundraising Steering Committee, led by Lan dz berg, Linda Gironda and Sara Jo Karger, is working on the plans. Others are welcome to join the group, Landzberg said.

Library Director Pat Barresi said the project will increase space in the program room, consolidate computers into one central area away from the room's front entrance, and relocate stacks closer to natural light.

The beige walls will become a pale blue, and the teal-colored chairs will be reupholstered in red, blue and yellow fabric.

The library was chartered by the state in 1920. It currently has 21,000 card holders with one-third of them children, Barresi said.

Each year, staff puts on roughly 400 programs for children, with many during summer and school vacations. It is the fifth-busiest library of the 38 public libraries in Westchester County, with one of the highest circulation rates of children's materials, according to annual statistics tabulated by the Westchester Library System.

So far, Barresi said, $72,000 has been raised, including a state grant. The latest fundraiser was a raffle for spa products and massage donated by Club Fit in Yorktown.

For Christina Wallace of Yorktown, story time with her daughter Gianna, 2, is a favorite weekly activity.

"It's a great place," said the stay-at-home mom. "I'd like a bigger story-time room and more interactive space for the children."
