YORKTOWN - The children's section at the John C. Hart Memorial Library is due for a major renovation.
The overcrowded and drab facility for the youngest readers will be renovated this summer with new furniture and carpeting, more natural lighting and the creation of a story-time room that will be nearly 50 percent larger than the current space.
"It's going to be a happy, clean place," said library Director Patricia Barresi.
A $60,000 state grant, along with private funding, will pay for the work, which is expected to be completed by October. Work could begin in August following a bidding process.
The children's wing of the library is 23 years old, and it has started to show its age, Barresi said. The strong demand for storytelling means that youngsters and their guardians are often packed in tight for readings.
"We certainly don't want to turn anyone away," Barresi said.
The library has been encouraging very young children to take part in activities, adding another group to the busy schedule for the facilities.
"It can get a little hot and crowded in there," said Christine Daly, a volunteer s toryteller."The new space should be a lot nicer."
A number of book stacks are being relocated to let in more sunlight, and a bright new color scheme will iend a cheerful air to the wing.
The library serves a large market - 21,000 cardholders, as well as 800 young people registered for summer programs.
A local mother, Janna Sciabbarrasi, was looking forward to the upgrades. "We're here at least twice a week, (sometimes) more," Sciabbarrasi said.
"It should be a great thing for my four kids," she said.
The library's community room will be used for children's programming while the construction work is underway.
