Forty Attend Open House At Hart Memorial Library

Approximately forty people attended the "Open House" Saturday at the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak.

Mrs. Arthur Lee who was in charge of the program for the afternoon introduced Mr. John Downing, Yorktown supervisor, who spoke briefly about how the library operated, how the monies were appropriated by the town, and how the Trustees were appointed.

Mrs. Stanley Grierson was in charge of the music. Four girls from the shrub Oak High School Glee Club sang three selections; Bells of St. Mary's, Crusaders Hymn and Beautiful Dreamer. Mrs. David Ellis accompanies on the piano.

Miss Mildred Strang paid tribute to Mrs. Anna Hendee, who was for many years a trustee of the library. Mrs. Hendee had a great interest in the library, community and, particularly the young people in the community. ;Mrs.· Hendee left a fund of $1500 to the library to be used to purchase furniture, and especially a clock which the library had never had. A children's table and six chairs and also a clock were on display/ which had been purchased from the fund.

Mrs. Arthur Lee in appreciation of Mrs. Helen Prudys twenty years of service to the library, presented her with a suit case, which was a gift from the trustees. 

Mrs: · :E. · Munson Frost was in charge of serving refreshments and was assisted by Mrs. Howard Olmstead. Miss Gertrude Hyatt, Mr. Munson Frost, Miss Mildted Strang, Mrs. Arthur Lee,  Trustees helped with the refreshments as did Mrs. Florence wolfinger.

Many of the guests who attended enjoyed looking over the new books and taking them home to read.

Shrub Oak Library Art Exhibit Held

Mqre than 100 persons attended the Shrub Oak Library Art Exhibit Reception, Saturday evening, July 30.

The reception officially opened the Second Annual Shrub Oak Exhibit, started last year under the supervision of Mr. Martin Brech, supervising librarian at that time. Mrs. Helen Purdy, present librarian, was instrumental in making arrangements for this exhibit.

At the reception, Mrs. Arthur Lee, chairman of the Hart Memoriai Library Board welcomed the guests and presented Horace Mcllhenney, of Rahway, New Jersey, who presented to the library an etching of a Shrub Oak scene done by his father several years ago.

Miss Marjorie McKee, of Mahopac, Director of the Juriior Workshop in White Plains, Spoke on the subject "Amateur and Professfional Art".
