Text

Since September , when the Trustees of the John C. Hart Memorial Library authorized the Civic Committee, of the Yorktown Women's Club to form a Friends of the Library group, over twenty Yorktown residents have expressed an interest in joining such a group. A natural question in a community that has seen the rise a decline of a number of organizations, is "Why another?" The answer is the Library Board's announcement in the Yorktown Herald of Oct. 28, that in the near future there will be a library building for Yorktown Heights. As a rural suburb of the New York region, and we will have to meet the challenge of our new residents, as put recently by one of them, "Why, your library hasn't a single reference book!" She referred to the Yorktown Heights Sranoh.
The Library Board has done yeoman's work these many years on very limited funds, and now that the chance to expand seems to be in sight, they need help. This means not only funds. Friends of the Library dues are only one dollar a year, with any additional contribution from those interested gratefully received. It means also a community-wide pride in our Library. We of Yorktown Heights would like to have a Branch Library that meets State requirements and so is eligible for State aid. Now we're only a poor relation of the beautifully-housed Main Library at Shrub Oak.
What can a Friends of the Library do? What the Ladies Aid does for the church or the PTA for the school. And if a dollar dues sounds like poor pickings when it comes to buying books or library equipment, remember that "every little bit added" sometimes ends up as quite a pile. All church workers know the value of an organization to unite small contributions. And of course the Board already has Mrs. M.J. Fox's wonderful promise to equip a meeting room.
Funds play a large role, but community interest does, too. The Friends will be the "Voice of the Library" to penetrate the iron curtain that seems to have shut off our really good collection of books from the people who surely want to read them. A cordial invitation is extended to all who would like to help make our Library more useable and used. We will hold our first get-together at the home of Miss H.M. Fogg on Hillcrest Road, Croton Heights, on Thursday November 18th, at 2:45 PM. Mrs. Eleanor Bond will then tell us about the work our group has made possible even before approval of the regular library budget, and we will plan for the future. All interested are invited.
